I just can’t seem to get away from Burgers!

Posted in The DFBMBE BlogPosts by David on July 13th, 2008

Well I haven’t posted for a while and that’s been due to the fact that I have had to get connected to the wireless system that covers the area where I am now living and working. It really is a great welfare support to have this ability to connect onto the web without having to queue for time and space in an internet cafe.

There are restrictions on bandwidth etc which is not the best for someone like me who needs access to his social media but I am sure solutions are out there for these problems.

I have just found out how to ftp from a web based system as the network router here blocks normal ftp platforms.

AND

I haven’t found out yet how I am going to be able to upload podcasts of any considerable length, but hey! these are nice little challenges eh?

Well just wanted to let you now I am still alive and getting back on track.
Went for a walk this afternoon around the area where I am and bumped into …. can you believe it Burger King.

Burgers get everywhere. Even Here!

Šaban Bajramović (Шабан Бајрамовић), the “King of Gypsy music” has died

Posted in The DFBMBE BlogPosts by David on June 8th, 2008

Šaban Bajramović (Шабан Бајрамовић), the “King of Gypsy music” died earlier today in a Cardiological Clinic in Niš, Southern Serbia. Šaban was 72 years of age when he passed away and had been living impoverished in Niš with serious health complications and was no longer able to walk. The government of Serbia had been intervening with the provision of some funds for him.

There will be a Podcast special on the DFBMBE Podcast soon, showcasing the life of the late Šaban Bajramović.

In February 2002, Andy Gill of The Independent wrote, “The Serbian singer (Šaban Bajramović), is clearly a giant talent, comparable in his own way to Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan or Mari Bonie Persen, someone capable of bringing their music to life with such vivid spirituality that it vaults with ease over the most impenetrable cultural barriers. His voice combines the anguish of rai with the soulfulness of fado - a sort of Balkan gypsy jazz”

Getting Ready to Launch across the Atlantic!

Posted in The DFBMBE BlogPosts by David on June 6th, 2008

Well it’s been nearly 2 years and 9 months since arriving in Canada to start the preparatory work for the successful launch of the project I have been invloved with since then.

Now it’s moving on time and back across the “pond” to South East Europe, Kosovo in fact.

Before the new challenges etc, its back again ripping life apart, compartmentalising (is there such a word?) it and hoping everything arrives at the other end in one piece and that the small bits of nostalgia that mean so much dont end up as shards in the bottom of the cardboard box.

Skunkability

Posted in The DFBMBE BlogPosts by David on June 5th, 2008

Well coming into work today was a gas!

In more ways than one.

Reason?

Where the skunk lives

The skunk can be found in southern parts of Canada. It likes to live along the edge of the forest, in bushy areas or on the grassy prairies. The striped skunk has a black coat with two white stripes down the back and one white stripe up the forehead. The stripes are a warning to other animals to stay away.

It is the size of a house cat. A skunk’s eyes and ears are small. It can not see well but its sense of hearing is good. The skunk has musk glands and can shoot a liquid that has an awful odor. First, it gives a warning when something approaches. It stiffens its legs, stamps the ground with its feet, snaps its teeth, and its hairs stand up. Then the skunk swings its rear end around, lifts its tail up out of the way and shoots. Out comes a terrible-smelling yellow mist. The spray can go as far as four meters.

Interesting facts

- A young skunk makes a good pet if the musk glands are removed.
- The terrible-smelling liquid is called mercaptan.
- The skunk’s spray burns the eyes and the nose.
- The skunk makes enough liquid for five sprays a week.
- It helps the farmer by eating insects and rodents that destroy crops.

Marmite!

Posted in The DFBMBE BlogPosts by David on June 3rd, 2008

Christian Payne (aka Documentally) recently commented about my Marmite jars, which I wash and just leave lying around in my kitchen as a sort of “nostalgia” from my childhood and I suppose weird English culture.

Here in Kingston, Ontario there are a lot of stores that sell this “Quintessential English Spread”.

Soon I will be in Pristina, Kosovo, where it will revert, (as it did during my last 7 year sojourn in the Balkans) to that of luxury status!

A Marmite moment to share with you.
